Infants also suffer from this dangerous disease. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the cause of Pediatric AIDS. Pediatric AIDS is the most advanced stage of HIV infection.
According to study reports, up to 90% infants get infected with AIDS from their mother. The infected mothers may or may not know that they are suffering from AIDS. The possibility of getting AIDS through breast feeding is rare, only a few kids get infected that way. Few babies and children get infected with AIDS, when they are sexually abused by someone who is already HIV positive or who is suffering from full-blown AIDS.
Certain drugs are available which can stop the transmission of virus to the fetus. These drugs can help those mothers who are tested HIV positive after their pregnancy. These mothers can take these drugs during their pregnancy and can prevent the fetus from getting infected. The risk of getting AIDS can be minimized if the baby is delivered through caesarean.
In some cases the children who do not born with the HIV may get infected later through their parents or the care takers. If the parents or care taker is taking drugs through injection or are indulged in unprotected sex, they are putting their whole family members on risk of getting infected with HIV.
Facts about HIV
AIDS is caused by the virus termed as HIV. T4 cells are the main fighting force of immune system against any kind of infection. In the initial stage of infection the HIV virus makes the T4 cells ineffective or totally destroys them without showing any symptoms. In the due course of time HIV completely destroys the body’s ability to fight against infection and many types of cancer by destroying or weakening the T4 cells.
