There are number of causes responsible for development of metatarsalgia. Excessive strain on the ball of foot is considered as the most common cause behind development of metatarsalgia. This excessive strain can be caused even by the routine activities like walking for long distances, spending more time on foot etc. Apart from the above main cause there are certain other causes which can trigger development of metatarsalgia. Some of such causes include:

  • Foot abnormality – foot with narrow high arch
  • Flat feet
  • Injuries – a stress fracture caused due to injury may lead to development of metatarsalgia
  • Complications resulted through other diseases like rheumatoid arthritis
  • Accumulation of fluid in foot
  • Obesity or overweight condition. This increases pressure on the entire foot and may result in strain on the ball of the foot leading to development of metatarsalgia
  • Muscle fatigue can also help in development of metatarsalgia

Treatment of Metatarsalgia

Like other joint and bone associated health conditions, there are few treatments available for curing metatarsalgia. Determining the root cause behind development of metatarsalgia plays an important role is selecting right method of treatment. The metatarsalgia treatment depends upon the factor that led to occurrence of pain. The treatments are basically aimed at relieving pain and providing comfort. Adopting preventive measure is an important aspect of metatarsalgia treatment. If the strain is the main cause, you must find out what caused such strain. If your shoes are culprit, change it immediately. Wearing best fitting footwear is important not only for preventing metatarsalgia but for other abnormalities related to heel, joint and toe.
