What Is Hodgkin’s disease?

Hodgkin’s is a type of lymphoma. Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system and is the most common type of cancer among kid’s ages from 10 to 14. But it’s a rare disease for kids. The lymphatic system is the system in the body that is responsible for fighting infections and keeping you healthy. It’s made up of tonsils, spleen, bone marrow, and chains of lymph nodes.

The disease is name for Dr. Thomas Hodgkin’s, who is responsible for many disease of the cancer in the lymph system in 1832.

What are Lymph nodes?

Lymph nodes are rounded masses of lymphatic tissue and are surrounded by a capsule of connected tissue. It helps filter the lymphatic fluid. It store white blood cells and is located along lymphatic vessels. Lymph nodes are called as Lymph glands.

Lymph nodes can play a vital role in cancer, as the lymphatic system can move the cancerous cells throughout the body.

What is a Spleen?

It is an organ that builds lymphocytes for the destruction and recycling of the old red blood cells. It is also a blood reservoir. It supplies the body with blood in emergencies such as bad cut. The spleen is the location where white blood cells trap organisms.

Spleen is shaped like a loose fist and tucked under left side of the diaphragm. It is located in the upper-left part of your abdomen and is protected by rib cage.

What is Bone Marrow?

The Bone marrow is a spongy material that fills the cavities of the bones and is the substance in which many blood types are produced.

What is the Thymus?

The Thymus is a tiny organ in the chest behind the breastbone, which is important in developing a special lymphocyte called a T cell.

The Hodgkin’s disease can start from anywhere where lymph nodes are located. It mostly begins in the lymph nodes in the upper part of the body.

Hodgkin’s disease enlarges the lymphatic tissue, and causes pressure on important structures of the organs. It can spread through the lymphatic vessels to other lymph nodes. Hodgkin’s disease gets into the blood vessels. When it gets into the blood vessels, it can spread to the other parts of the body, which includes the liver and lungs.

Symptoms of Hodgkin’s disease

Persons who have Hodgkin’s disease sometimes think they have flu. There may be occasion that they have fevers, feel achy, or may have swollen glands and often in the neck or groin area. Enlarged lymph nodes in the chest can cause a cough, pain in the chest or difficulty in breathing. However, kids may not have any other symptoms other than lymph.

How is Hodgkin’s disease Diagnosed?

If Hodgkin’s disease is suspected that doctor will ask about the medical history and perform a physical test to check the general signs of your health. The test includes seeing if the lymph nodes in the neck, underarm, or groin are enlarged. The doctor may ask for blood tests.

The other diagnose of the Hodgkin’s disease includes the following tests:

X-rays – High radiation may be used to take pictures of areas inside the body, such as the chest, bones, liver and spleen.

CT or CAT Scan – The detailed pictures of areas inside the body. The pictures are created by a computer connected to x-ray machine.

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) – Details pictures of areas inside the body produced with a powerful magnet connected to a computer.

Treatment for Hodgkin’s disease

There is a treatment available for Hodgkin’s disease where the doctor develops a treatment plan. The treatment depends on the stages of the disease, the size of lymph nodes etc. The age, sex and general health of the patients are taken into consideration while treating Hodgkin’s disease.

Methods of Treatment

Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are the most common treatments for Hodgkin’s disease.

Radiation therapy – The radiation therapy involves the use of high-energy rays to kill cancerous cells. Depending upon the treatment it may give alone or together with chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy – It is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells.

Statistics of Hodgkin’s disease

  • Less than 1 percent of cases of Hodgkin’s disease cancer are registered in United States.
  • It is more common in kids and men than in women.
