What is Halitosis?

In medical terms bad breath is otherwise known as Halitosis or oral malodor. Most commonly refereed to as bad breath or sour smelling breath, this is a disorder that arises from diseases of the gums or the tooth. Sometimes it can also result from intestinal disorders. This at times may be a temporary phase and it may go after some time when you follow proper dental hygiene. What causes Halitosis?

Any food particle that decays produces a sour smelling stench. This is the case if food particles are also left in the mouth. It is necessary to clean the mouth after having your food. The food particles may settle in crevices in the teeth or the particles may remain on the tongue or stick tot eh roof of the mouth. It is necessary to clean all these places thoroughly to maintain a good oral hygiene.

More often than not, halitosis shows signs of emanating from the gums and the tongue. The smell is caused by the decayed food particles that have left over in your mouth. In most cases, halitosis originates from the gums and tongue. The decay from the mouth is a result of poor oral hygiene. The odor may also be caused as a result of diabetes, gum diseases, drugs, and infection in the liver or kidneys, liver diseases, poor diet, smoking stress and tooth decay.

How to Lower Risks of developing Halitosis?

It is quite necessary to follow a few simple precautions and rules to keep halitosis at bay. They are
(a) Brushing of your teeth twice a day is necessary. Follow it up with some vigorous flossing. Food particles are likely to collect under the gums, remove them by flossing.
(b) Make use of a good toothbrush and replace them one in every two months.
(c) Do not make use of mouth washes that have any flavoring in them, this increases the chance of your mouth stinking in the morning. Some mouth washes are market as having dyes / coloring agents like dyes and some add a small amount of alcohol. See the composition of the mouth wash before you pick them up from the medical store.
(d) Stress in one main contributing factor towards mouth odor so one must try to avoid stress to the maximum. Get some good exercise and some sunlight on your face.
(e) Try to avoid foods that stick to your mouth after you have them; this so mainly for dinner or a late supper. Foods like sweets, meats and cheese stick to the roof of your mouth and this will bring out the bad smell in your mouth.
(f) Parsley is a natural mouth wash. Chew on some parsley after a heavy meal. It will also help you with digestion.

Halitosis is kept at bay by the presence of saliva in your mouth. The saliva washes away the food particles and keeps your mouth clean.

Awaking to Halitosis

As saliva produces in the mouth can wash away the halitosis, the production of saliva is brought down when one is asleep. As the food particles that remains in your mouth can cause these problems, brush your teeth well before going to bed.
