Burping

Necessity of burping a baby
For releasing the excessive air from the stomach of a baby the process of burping is very helpful. Normally the formation of air in a child gets accumulated during feeding or the formation of air can happen due to crying. If the method of burping is applied with right technique, then the air in baby’s stomach will form a large bubble then this air bubble can be released in a burp.

Consequences of not burping a baby
Burping is very essential for every infant. In case the accumulated air in the stomach of a baby is not released through the process of burping, the child may have the problem of stomachache. Infants should be burped frequently. Babies may develop the problem of spitting up, crankiness and gassiness if the babies are not burped from time to time.

Amount of air the baby may burp up
The type of feeding and the rate of eating are the main factors which affect the amount of air a baby will burp up. The amount of air a breast-fed baby will accumulate will be less in comparison to a baby who is fed through a bottle. As the baby grows up you will automatically have an idea about your child that how much air he/she will accumulate.

Method of burping :
Be very careful while burping a baby other wise the baby may develop some problems. Give a gentle pat or rubbing, never give hard pat or rubbing to a baby. If the baby is patted or rubbed with hard hands than the baby may spit up his whole feed.

Listed below are some of the positions, out of which you can chose one. While selecting the position keep in mind that the baby feels comfortable in that particular position.

  • Position One: in this position you have to keep acloth diaper on your shoulder and now place your baby in an upright position on it. Give very gentle patting or rubbing between the shoulder blades of your baby.
  • Position Two: in this position place a cloth diaper on your lap, now laid the baby keeping the stomach downwards. Gently pat or rub the back of the baby.
  • Position Three: in this position you have to hold the baby in your lap in an upright position with the chin of the baby is touching your head. Loosely wrap a cloth on your hand. Now with that hand gently rub or pat the baby’s back.

Frequency of Burping a Baby
There are no set rules about number of times a baby requires burping. The frequency of burping varies with the baby. Some of the babies require burping after consuming 2 to 3 ounces if babies are fed through bottle and every time in case of breast feeding
